In our continuing series of surgical videos via a head-mounted GoPro camera, we have a recently released video showing the exchange of a saline to silicone breast implant.
There are various reasons why a patient would have their breast implants exchanged. It could be because the implant leaked or deflated. It could be because they want to upgrade to the newer gummy bear implants from their older silicone or saline implants. And finally, it could be that they just want a bigger size to get a bigger lift to their breasts.
The patient in the video had her implant exchange for a couple of the reasons above. Specifically, she was not happy with the “feel” of her saline implants and wanted silicone implants. Silicone feels and looks more natural than saline. And since there’s been no connection between silicone implants and lupus, they’re the more requested implants these days. The patient also wanted a lift to her breasts without removing excess skin which could require additional scars. You can see a breast lift with implants in this video here.
This patient originally had 500cc saline implants but wanted to upgrade to 750cc silicone implants. While normally 750cc implants would look very large on most patients, this particular patient is very tall and broad chested which allows her to “wear” her implants without looking inappropriate. The breast pocket containing her implants from her first operation was very large – larger than the implants themselves. So by placing larger implants in her existing implant pockets, we were able to fill her breasts more effectively. You can see this in the video below.
