I see patients everyday asking about lip injections. Sometimes they’re almost afraid to ask because of the stigma associated with lip injections. For example, most people assume that lip injections always lead to fish lips. But it’s not always the case. If you find the right plastic surgeon for your lip injections, you can be a part of the process, not caught up in it.
Lip injections, if done correctly, can give you an enhanced look, not an inflated look. As you can see in the photo below, I inject filler (Juvederm, Restylane or Belotero) to one half of the upper lip, let the patient check themselves out in the mirror and then inject the same or more in the remaining portions of the lips, based on the patient’s wants and “needs”.
And after receiving input from my patient, I proceed with injections to the rest of the lips. Keep in mind, lip injections, I would think, are probably very painful without local anesthesia. But here’s the thing – if your doctor injects local anesthesia directly into the lips to numb them, it will inflate the lips, which makes it hard to judge how much filler to inject into the lip since they’re already inflated with lidocaine. So this is why it’s so important to find a qualified plastic surgeon or dermatologist that is comfortable with a “regional block”. What this means is that by injecting local anesthetic inside the mouth, away from your lips, the lips can become completely numb but still be of normal size so that it’s easier for the doctor to judge how much filler to place into the lips. In the photo below, after giving the patient above a regional block that allowed them to have lip injections without ANY pain, you can see the final result of the lip injections.
Hopefully you’ll agree that her lips don’t look like duck lips! Having over-inflated lips is a reasonable concern so It’s important that you convey those concerns to your doctor.
