Partial Knee Replacement

The purpose of knee replacement surgery is to decrease pain and restore more normal function to the knee. This is done by substituting the cartilage in the knee that has been damaged by arthritis or injury with an artificial replacement. A partial knee (unicompartmental) replacement is utilized if the arthritis or injury is confined to a single area in the knee (commonly the inner aspect) compared to total joint replacement in which the entire knee is affected. Recovery time and discomfort level with a partial knee replacement is typically much less than in a total knee replacement.
